Bala Mohammed Dumps PDP for APM as Makinde’s Exit Looms

A major political shake-up has hit Nigeria’s opposition landscape as Bala Mohammed has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and defected to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), citing the party’s lingering leadership crisis and legal uncertainty.

The Bauchi State governor announced his defection on Saturday after consultations with political stakeholders, saying recent developments within the PDP, including the Supreme Court judgment on the party’s leadership dispute, had left the opposition party without a clear direction.  

Mohammed said the move was a strategic decision aimed at securing political stability and providing a credible platform for his supporters ahead of the 2027 general elections.

His exit marks a significant blow to the PDP, where he previously served as chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum.

Meanwhile, indications have emerged that Seyi Makinde may also be considering leaving the party, amid growing internal tensions and unresolved leadership disputes.

Sources close to the Oyo State Government reportedly disclosed that Makinde is weighing his political options, although no official confirmation has been made regarding his resignation from the party. 

The latest development comes as the PDP continues to grapple with internal divisions, defections, and legal battles that have weakened its position ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Political analysts say Bala Mohammed’s defection could trigger fresh realignments across opposition ranks, with attention now shifting to Makinde and other key party figures who may decide their next political moves in the coming weeks.
