ADC Crisis Deepens Amid Allegations of Betrayal and Political Interference

The internal crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has intensified, raising fresh concerns about party stability and its implications for Nigeria’s democratic process.

A former lawmaker, Ishaku Abbo, has publicly traced the root of the crisis to a leadership reshuffle that followed the resignation of key party officials, including Nafiu Bala, a former Deputy National Chairman.

According to Abbo, the entire National Working Committee (NWC) stepped down to pave the way for a new leadership under former Senate President David Mark as National Chairman, alongside Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary.

Alleged Breach of Agreement

Abbo alleged that prior to the leadership transition, an agreement was reached to allocate party positions across geopolitical zones to accommodate legacy members. Specifically, the position of National Vice Chairman (Northeast) was reportedly promised to Nafiu Bala.

However, the agreement was allegedly breached when the new leadership instead appointed Babachir David Lawal to the position. Bala was reportedly offered a lesser role as Zonal Financial Secretary, which he rejected.

Escalation of Tensions

The development, Abbo claimed, led to dissatisfaction and internal division within the party. He further alleged that aggrieved members began mobilizing legal and political efforts against the party leadership.

The former senator also suggested that external political forces may be influencing the crisis, alleging that some high-ranking government officials and political actors are backing moves to destabilize the party, though he did not name individuals.

Claims of Institutional Pressure

Abbo further accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of taking actions that could worsen the situation, warning that such moves may undermine democratic principles if not addressed.

Call for Resolution

He called on Nafiu Bala to withdraw any ongoing legal action and urged party stakeholders to resolve the dispute internally in the interest of unity and democratic stability.

Abbo also announced plans to address the issue publicly, including concerns about the ADC structure in Adamawa State ahead of upcoming party congresses.

Political analysts warn that prolonged internal conflicts within opposition parties like the African Democratic Congress could weaken political pluralism in Nigeria, particularly as the country approaches future electoral cycles.
