INEC Suspends Engagement with ADC Factions Over Leadership Crisis

Abuja, April 1, 2026 – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the suspension of all official dealings with the rival factions of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as the party’s leadership crisis continues to intensify.

The decision affects factions loyal to David Mark and Nafiu Bala, both of whom are laying claim to the leadership of the party. The dispute has created growing uncertainty within the ADC, prompting the electoral body to adopt a neutral position pending judicial determination.

INEC stated that it will no longer supervise, monitor, or participate in any meetings, congresses, or activities of the party until a competent court delivers a final judgment on the matter. The Commission emphasized that this step is necessary to safeguard its neutrality, credibility, and adherence to the rule of law.

The Commission further disclosed that its decision was influenced by conflicting legal communications received from parties involved in the dispute. Among them is a letter from the law firm of Sulaiman Usman SAN & Co, dated March 16, 2026, titled: “Re: Notice of Pending Proceedings Before the Federal High Court and Caution Against Any Purported Recognition of Mr. Nafiu Bala Gombe as Acting National Chairman of African Democratic Congress (ADC)”. The letter was written on behalf of concerned stakeholders within the ADC, urging INEC to refrain from recognizing any contested leadership pending court resolution.

INEC also acknowledged receiving another letter from Summit Law Chambers, equally dated March 16, 2026, titled: “Demand for the Enforcement of the Orders Made by the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division in Appeal No: CA/ABJ/145/2026: Senator David Mark v. Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe & 4 Others”. The correspondence, written on behalf of Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe, called on the Commission to enforce existing appellate court orders relating to the leadership dispute.

In line with these developments, INEC confirmed that it has removed the names of Senator David Mark and other disputed party officials from its official portal, in compliance with court directives and to avoid appearing to endorse any faction while the matter remains sub judice.

Political observers note that INEC’s action could have far-reaching implications for the ADC, particularly regarding party administration, internal decision-making, candidate nominations, and participation in future elections, all of which depend on official recognition by the electoral body.

The leadership crisis has continued to draw attention from political stakeholders, with increasing calls for a swift judicial resolution to restore order and stability within the party. Until then, INEC’s stance effectively places the ADC in a state of operational uncertainty.

The Commission reiterated its commitment to due process, neutrality, and strict compliance with court rulings, stressing that its actions are guided solely by legal considerations and the need to uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system.
